The Georgia Bulldogs make their first road trip and play their first Southeastern Conference game of the new college football season: the Dogs--minus star receiver A.J. Green--take on the South Carolina Gamecocks. It's a noon kickoff in Columbia. Green will sit out this week's game and, pending the outcome of University appeals, possibly two more games. He's being punished by the NCAA for selling the game jersey he wore in last season's Independence Bowl game. You will hear Saturday's game here on the New FM 103.7.
This week's court ruling notwithstanding, officials in the Northeast Georgia Health Systems say it will likely be 2014 before a new hospital is open in south Hall County: the Georgia Supreme Court has cleared the way for construction of the new facility, a 100-bed community hospital planned for Braselton. The court decision ends, at least for now, a long-running dispute between hospital planners and officials with the Barrow Regional Medical Center in Winder.
The Gainesville Police and Fire Departments hold a Saturday ceremony to mark the 9th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks: the service gets underway at 9:30 tomorrow morning in front of Fire Station 1 on Jesse Jewell Parkway in Gainesville.
A 33 year-old Gainesville man is arrested, accused of manufacturing fake documents for illegal immigrants: the Hall County Sheriff's Department says David Alcantor was selling bogus Social Security cards.
Four Gainesville teenagers were arrested on marijuana trafficking charges Thursday. Three 18 year-olds and a 17 year-old were booked into the Hall County jail.
The Georgia Bulldogs plan to appeal the suspension slapped on wide receiver A.J. Green. The NCAA says Green will miss the next three games, including Saturday's showdown with South Carolina, his punishment for selling a Bulldog game jersey.
Lawyers for convicted killer Ricky Gear made their appeal for a new trial Wednesday, arguing before the Georgia Supreme Court that extensive pre-trial publicity made it impossible to seat an impartial jury for his original trial in 2008. Gear was convicted of killing a Winder man, shooting 21 year-old motorcyclist Brian Mough at his home in Bogart. Gear argued he shot in self-defense.
A guilty plea and a life sentence for an accused teenaged killer in Gainesville: 17 year-old Danial Ayala was in Hall County Superior Court Wednesday, changing his original not guilty plea in the March murder of 63 year-old Ramon Hernandez. Hernandez was beaten to death in his home in Gainesville.
The Georgia Bioscience Joint Development Authority meets today: the group that is looking to lure high-tech industries to the Highway 316 corridor gathers at 3 o'clock in the Community Center in Winder. Representatives from Gwinnett, Barrow, Oconee, and Athens-Clarke counties comprise the Georgia Bioscience Joint Development Authority.
The funeral for T.J. Patillo is set for today, 11 o'clock this morning at the Hopewell Baptist Church: the 31 year-old Flowery Branch man was killed in a Labor Day weekend bicycle accident. His bike was struck by a car near Oakwood. The Georgia State Patrol investigation continues. So far, no charges have been filed against the driver of the car.
